Polarised light micrograph of a radial section of mature wood of Picea abiens, the Norway or European spruce, better known as the Christmas tree. It is a large evergreen conifer native across parts of central and northern Europe. Running horizontally are medullary rays as they appear in radial section. Their function is to pass nutrients and water laterally. Tracheids, Tracheids, typically with uniseriate pits, are seen running vertically. Magnification: x40 at 10cm wide. | |
