Periapical cyst, light micrograph. A periapical, or radicular, cyst is a very common lesion located at the tooth apex as a result of pulpal necrosis (tissue death), secondary to dental caries or trauma. It appears as a pathological cavity lined by epithelium derived from the epithelial cell rests of Malassez. The cyst is usually asymptomatic, but as show in this micrograph, may develop a secondary infection that may cause pain and damage (periapical granuloma). | |
