Cervical smear test equipment. Equipment laid out ready to perform a cervical smear test (Pap test). A smear test is a screening method used to detect potentially pre-cancerous and cancerous processes in the cervix (opening of the uterus/womb). The procedure is performed by using a speculum (clear (centre) to open the vaginal canal. A spatula (lower right) is then inserted into the vagina and used to collect a sample of cells from the cervix. The collected cells are examined under a microscope to look for abnormalities. | |
