Silver Needle Galaxy (NGC 4244), Hubble Space Telescope (HST) image. Numerous bright clumps of gas can be seen scattered across the length of this galaxy, seen edge-on from Earth. Dark dust lanes surround the galaxy's core. NGC 4244 also has a bright star cluster at its centre. The HST observations were taken as part of the GHOSTS survey, which is scanning nearby galaxies to explore how they and their stars formed to get a more complete view of the history of the Universe. NGC 4244 is 65, 000 light years across and is around 13.5 million light years away, in the constellation of Canes Venatici. This image, combining optical and infrared data from the HST's Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) sensor, was published in 2014. | |
