Hedgehog with a tick. European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) with a parasitic tick above its left eye. This parasite can seriously harm hedgehogs. The European hedgehog is found in forests, heathland and scrub throughout northern and central Europe, as well as in cities. As an omnivore, a hedgehog's diet includes berries, insects, worms and small vertebrates. It is nocturnal and hibernates throughout the winter. Photographed in the UK. | |
