Bronze statue of Mercurious, the Roman messenger god and god of traders, commonly identified with the Greek fleet-footed messenger of the gods, Hermes. It was completed in 1580 by the Flemish sculptor Jean Boulogne, commonly known as Giambologna. The foremost mannerist sculptor, he was noted for his ability to create a sense of movement and action in his work. This statue is one of his most famous and successful.
