Testing for carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide gas (CO2) is heavier than air. Here carbon dioxide has been collected in a beaker by displacing oxygen-containing air. When a burning splint is thrust into the beaker, the flame is extinguished. This can be used as a test for carbon dioxide. However, any oxygen-free gas will also extinguish a flame, therefore this test could result in a misidentification. | |
