Atala Butterfly (Eumaeus atala). Florida, in September. The Florida subspecies of Atala butterfly was believed to be extinct at one point, as no specimens were seen from 1937-1959. It declined due to overcollection of it's host plant, a native cycad called the Coontie, which also supplied the toxins that make the aposematically-colored butterfly toxic or unpalatable. | |
