Comparison of the hands of a healthy patient (far left and right) and a patient suffering from hemochromatosis, or iron overload (centre). Hemochromatosis is the accumulation of iron in the body. Iron is stored in the liver, heart and pancreas, and overabsorption can ultimately lead to organ failure if left untreated. The most important causes are hereditary hemochromatosis (HHC), a genetic disorder, and transfusional iron overload, which can result from repeated blood transfusions. | |
