Whipples disease is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Tropheryma whipplei. It is most commonly a disorder of the gastrointestinal tract. In its more advanced form, malabsorption (insufficient absorption of nutrients from the diet) leads to wasting and the enlargement of lymph nodes in the abdomen. Whipple's disease also may affect other parts of the body including the heart, brain, joints, skin, lungs and the eyes. It can usually be cured with long-term antibiotic therapy; if the disease is left untreated, it is ultimately fatal. | |
