An illustration of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a disease which occurs when heart muscles cells enlarge and cause the walls of the ventricles to thicken, decreasing the amount of blood the ventricle can hold. This disease is caused by a mutation in heart muscle proteins which is usually inherited, but can also develop over time due to high blood pressure or aging. It is also a common cause of sudden cardiac arrest among young athletes. | |
