Methanol oxidation, 1 of 3. Oxidation of a primary alcohol (methanol, CH3OH) by potassium dichromate (VI) (K2Cr2O7). In the process chromium is reduced from +6 oxidation state to +3 oxidation state. This is physically observed as a colour change from orange to green to blue. Here 0.4 mL of 0.23M solution of potassium dichromate acidified with sulfuric acid (H2SO4) was added to a test tube with 6.5 mL of methanol. The reaction rate was slow, Photo 1 was taken at the start, Photo 2 - after 6 min and Photo 3 - after 2 hours.
