Iron (III) oxide in water and in hydrochloric acid. Left: rusty-red solid iron (III) oxide (FeO3) is insoluble in and does not react with water (H2O). Right: it does react with concentrated (12 M) hydrochloric acid (HCl) at room temperature, producing orange-red solution of iron (III) chloride (FeCl3) and water: Fe2O3 + HCl -> FeCl3 + H2O. The reaction is slow, the photo was taken after solid iron (III) oxide has been in the acid for several hours while being periodically shaken. | |
