The Bullet Ant or 24 Hour Ant, Paraponera clavata, is one of the largest ants in the world. They inhabit rainforest habitat across the Amazon Basin. They live in nests (rendering another common name, the solitary ant, as meaningless) and defend the area around their nest vigorously. They can use their giant mandibles to deliver a considerable bite; however, it is their sting that garners them their reputation and the common name of bullet ant. The sting from this ant causes intense pain and can develop into a fever and flu-like symptoms. These symptoms can last hours to days. A lump beneath the skin, where the sting occurred, can last for weeks, even months. This individual was photographed in the region of Iquitos, Peru, in 2013. | |
