LDN 1622 and LDN 1621 are a pair of interesting dark nebulae that lie in front of a large area of emission nebulosity that is part of Barnard's Loop in central Orion. This area is part of the much larger Orion molecular cloud. LDN 1622 is the larger dark nebula below right center, and LDN 1621 is above left center. They are believed to be located 500 light-years away. This complex of dark nebulosity is sometimes called the Bogeyman nebula, although there are several different spellings including Boogeyman, Bogey Man, Boogey Man, Boogieman, and Boogie Man. It is also sometimes called the Phantom nebula. These nebulae were cataloged by Beverly T. Lynds in 1962. | |
