This large complex of bright and dark nebulosity is located in the center of the constellation of Cygnus the Swan, also known as the Northern Cross. The North America Nebula, NGC 7000, and Pelican Nebula, IC 5070, are at lower left. The Butterfly Nebula, IC 1318, lies in the center of the frame. The Crescent Nebula, NGC 6888, lies just above and to the right of the Butterfly Nebula. Between the North America and Butterfly nebulae lies the Northern Coal Sack, a large dark nebula made of dust and gas that obscures some of the stars behind it. The Veil Nebula, NGC 6990 and NGC 6992, and Pickering's Triangular Wisp are at lower right. The large open cluster NGC 6940 lies near the right edge of the image about halfway down from the top of the frame. This monochrome grayscale image was made with a 6nm narrowband hydrogen-alpha filter. North is to the left in this image which covers approximately 24 x 16 degrees of sky. | |
