103P / Comet Hartley 2 (upper right) passes near open cluster M46 (lower left) in the constellation of Puppis. The small round object to the upper left of M46 is NGC 2438, a planetary nebula. Comet Hartley 2 is a young dwarf comet heading out into the outer reaches of the solar system. M46 is located at a distance of about 5, 400 light years away, inside our own galaxy, but far outside of the solar system. | |
