A photograph from 1897 showing Swedish balloonists S. A. Andree (1854-97) (front), Knut Fraenkel (1870-97) (left), and Nils Strindberg (1872-97) (right). These men, led by Andree, attempted to reach the North Pole by hydrogen balloon. The journey ended in tragedy when the balloon failed and was grounded after a couple of days in the air. Andree and his companions survived for three months before all three perished in the harsh Arctic terrain. The chance discovery in 1930 of the expedition's last camp yielded much information about their disastrous journey. | |
