Potassium permanganate, KMnO4, is a strong oxidizing agent and is reduced when it reacts. Here a circa 103M solution of potassium permanganate (left beaker) has been added to beakers containing a primary alcohol (70% ethanol) (centre), and a secondary alcohol (71% isopropanol) (right). Alcohols reduced violet Mn 7+ to nearly colourless Mn 2+. A dropperful of 1M NaOH has been added to both alcohols to promote a greater oxidation speed. | |
