This bucket style enema syringe issued by a hospital for home use by a patient dates to about 1970. The semi-transparent plastic bucket allowed the water level to be easily monitored. Another unique feature is the nozzle was not detachable. The hose simply ended in a rounded tip with two holes that permitted the contents to flow into the rectum. A black mark indicated the maximum point it should be inserted. Enemas are used to cleanse the bowel, rectum and colon of accumulated waste or provide relief from constipation. Though the use of enemas is common, especially among practitioners of naturopathy and yoga, their alleged health benefits are disputed by the mainstream medical community. | |
