Steam Powered Fire Engine, 19th Century
A fire engine is a vehicle designed primarily for firefighting operations. The earliest engines were small and were either carried by four men, or mounted on skids and dragged to a fire. As the engines grew larger they became horse-drawn and later self-propelled by steam engines. A steam engine is a heat engine that performs mechanical work using steam as its working fluid. Steam engines are external combustion engines, where the working fluid is separate from the combustion products. Water is heated and transforms into steam within a boiler operating at a high pressure. When expanded through pistons or turbines, mechanical work is done. The reduced-pressure steam is then condensed and pumped back into the boiler. The first self-propelled steam-driven fire engine was built in New York in 1841. Unfortunately for the manufacturers, some firefighters sabotaged the device and its use was discontinued. Motorized fire engines did not become commonplace
