Illuminating the sinuses with Lucite, 1940s. Illumination of the paranasal sinuses is achieved by the use of Lucite acrylic resin in this surgical instrument. Lucite, then a newly developed plastic from the DuPont company, conducts very little heat, making it ideal for surgical purposes. It also allows light to be reflected around curves. Photographed in the 1950s.
