Healthy tooth and decayed tooth. Models of sections through a healthy human tooth, and a decayed tooth (right). The decay (black) has reached the pulp cavity inside the tooth. Tooth decay is a breakdown of the hard tissues of the teeth (enamel, dentine and cementum) by acids produced by bacteria as they break down food particles. This process causes cavities in the teeth that can expose the nerve inside, causing pain. Treatment is usually through repairing the tooth with dental fillings.
