Meerkats (Suricata suricatta) peering out of their burrow entrance. The meerkat lives in colonies in desert regions of southern Africa and emerges from these burrows to feed during the day, mainly on insects. Guards keep watch for predators, and a shrill warning cry will send the colony fleeing to its underground burrows. Photographed in the Kalahari regions of South Africa and Botswana. | |
