Meerkat (Suricata suricatta) looking upwards from its perch on a dead branch. It is watching for predators, especially vultures. The meerkat lives in colonies in desert regions of southern Africa and feeds during the day, mainly on insects. A shrill warning cry will send the colony fleeing to its underground burrows. Photographed in the Kalahari regions of South Africa and Botswana. | |
