Hiatus hernia. Endoscope view from below of a hiatus hernia at the junction between the stomach and the small intestine. A hiatus hernia is the protrusion of part of the stomach into the thorax through the hole in the diaphragm (hiatus) that the oesophagus normally passes through. Hiatus hernias are extremely common and usually produce no symptoms. In severe cases they may cause gastroesophageal reflux, resulting in heartburn. | |
