Skylab emergency sunshield fabrication, 1973. Workmen in the GE Building near the Johnson Space Center, Houston, Texas, USA, folding a sail-like shade being fabricated for use as a sunshield for the Skylab Orbital Workshop (OWS). The three-layered shade will be composed of a top layer of aluminized mylar, a middle layer of laminated nylon, and a bottom layer of thin nylon. The work shown here was part of the crash programme to prepare a sunshield for Skylab to replace the original sunshield which was lost when Skylab I was launched on 14 May 1973. The improvised sunshield parasol design by Jack Kinzler was successfully deployed by astronauts on the first crewed mission to Skylab that launched on 25 May 1973. Photographed on 18 May 1973.
