A hybrid garden strawberry, Fragaria x ananassa. The picture shows one of the most familiar fruits in the world; global production is estimated to be about 10 million tonnes per annum, and rising. Botanically, the fruits"" are the small yellow-green particles on the surface of the strawberry. These are achenes, which - to a botanist - are single-seeded fruits. The red flesh of a strawberry is the receptacle; the upper part of the stem from which flowers arise. In a strawberry flower, the receptacle is convex; and as it inflates after pollination, it becomes - strawberry-shaped. The commonly grown garden strawberry is a short day plant; it flowers in late Spring, before the long days of Summer arrive. Strawberry varieties may also be long day plants (flower late Summer), or day neutral (flower throughout the year). The garden strawberry was first bred in France in the 1750s." | |
