Ares I-X test rocket launch, 2009. NASA's Ares I-X test rocket rising from Launch Pad 39B at the Kennedy Space Center, Florida, USA. This rocket reached a speed of 160 kilometres per hour in eight seconds. This 6-minute test flight started at 11:30am local time on 28 October 2009. More than 700 sensors on the rocket sent back data used to refine the design. The Ares rockets were part of NASA's Constellation Program of 2004, intended to put astronauts back on the Moon by 2020, and then carry out missions to Mars. Ares I was to launch crews in the crew exploration vehicle Orion. The Constellation program was cancelled in 2009. | |
