Barrel jellyfish (Rhizostoma pulmo) heading to the surface in search of the light needed to trigger the symbiotic algae living inside it. Jellyfish have developed an ability to recognize the light, and perform vertical migrations in the water column. This jellyfish is found in the open sea and coastal waters of the Atlantic Ocean. It can reach sizes of over 60 centimetres across. A jellyfish's prey of fish, plankton or crustaceans is brought to its mouth at the centre of the underside of the bell, using its tentacles. Jellyfish are free-swimming aquatic invertebrates that are related to the corals and anemones. Jellyfish swim by contractions of their bell. Photographed in the Mediterranean Sea. | |
