Vitamin D3 800 IU (international unit) soft capsules. They are taken as a dietary supplement to prevent or treat a vitamin D deficiency. The active substance is colecalciferol (vitamin D3). Each capsule contains 0.02 mg colecalciferol corresponding to 800 IU vitamin D3.. Vitamin D is necessary to regulate the amount of calcium and phosphate in the body to promote bone health and development. It is naturally synthesized in skin and functions as a pro-hormone, being converted to calcitriol. Though it is also found in some foods, the best source of vitamin D comes from the exposure of bare skin to the ultraviolet B (UVB) rays in sunlight. Currently a daily supplement of 10 mcg (μg), equivalent to 400 IU, is recommended, but doctors may prescribe 800 IU (20 micrograms) for the elderly, especially if you have a bone condition such as osteoporosis. | |
