Heliosphere. Illustration of the heliosphere and its features. The heliosphere is a space in the interstellar medium formed by the Sun (centre left) and its solar wind. The shape of the heliosphere is formed by the direction of travel of the Sun through the interstellar medium, here from right to left. The features of the heliosphere include (left to right) the bow shock, the heliosheath and heliopause, and the termination shock. The Sun's solar wind and magnetic field help shield the solar system from the impact of the interstellar medium. | |
