Marie Antoinette (1755-1793), Queen of France. Born Maria Antonia Josepha Johanna, she was the youngest daughter of Empress Maria Theresa of Austria and Francis I, Holy Roman Emperor. She married Louis-Auguste, heir to the throne of France, in 1770 and became queen in 1774 when her husband was crowned King Louis XIV. Initially popular, a sequence of scandals led to her being viewed as wasteful, promiscuous and sympathetic to the enemies of France. The royal family was put under house arrest at the start of the Revolution in 1789. The monarchy was abolished in 1792 and in the following year Marie Antoinette was convicted of treason by the Revolutionary Tribunal. She was executed at the guillotine on 16 October 1793. | |
