Illustration and photo-reconstruction of the ancient North American false saber-toothed cat Barbourofelis fricki. This was the largest Barbourofelis species. It lived in North America and was the size of a modern lion, but heavier, due to its unusually strong physique. It had a very robust constitution and the largest individuals are thought to weight up to 300 kilograms. The skull of Barburofelis was shortened to a greater degree than in Smilodon saber-toothed cats and its hypertrophied upper canines were perhaps even more advanced. | |
