Illustration and photo-reconstruction of the ancient rhinoceros-like Brontotheriidae Embolotherium ergilenseon. Embolotherium ergilense is a representative of the brontoterieds family in the perissodactyle's order. These are large terrestrial mammals, larger than the rhino. Like all rhinos, they walked on their toes rather than the whole foot (i.e. they were digitigrade). The group was well represented in savannah landscapes of Central Asia and North America, mainly in the Oligocene. The size of the skull (125 centimetres long) implies it measured over 4 metres at the shoulder and weighed about 7 tonnes. | |
