Illustration of the brass azimuth quadrant from Tycho Brahe's observatory at Uraniborg, Hven, Denmark (now Sweden). This quadrant had a radius of 65 centimetres. It was used for Brahe's observations of the Great Comet of 1577. Brahe (1546-1601) is considered the greatest astronomical observer of the pre-telescopic era. This illustration is from a 1603 edition of Brahe's 'De Mundi Aetherei Recentioribus Phaenomenis Liber Secundus' (Second Book About Recent Phenomena in the Celestial World) first published in 1588. | |
