Milky Way over GranTeCan telescope. In the night sky are the stars and nebulae of the Milky Way. The NGC 6188 emission nebula (pink, above and left of dome) is located 4000 light years away in the constellation of Ara. The Gran Telescopio Canarias (GranTeCan) telescope, part of Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, La Palma, Canary Islands, is a 10.4-metre reflecting telescope. It has been the world's largest single-aperture optical telescope since it opened in 2009. Operated by institutions from Spain, the USA and Mexico, it is located at an altitude of 2267 metres on the edge of the Caldera de Taburiente region of the island. Photographed on 19 May 2018. | |
