Shell of fossil ammonite sliced in half and polished across its plane of symmetry to expose the internal chambers. During the process of fossilization this shell has been entirely replaced by the mineral pyrite (FeS2). In professional terminology this is called a pyrite pseudomorph after a fossil ammonite. In addition the internal chambers are lined with a coating of microcrystalline pyrite. Actual diameter of the ammonite is 50 mm. | |
