Milky Way and Moon over yaks in Tibet. Vertical band of the Milky Way (centre) in the night sky, to the right of the north face of Mount Kailash (centre left, 6638 metres) in Tibet, western China. The Milky Way is our galaxy seen from the inside, forming a band of stars and nebulae stretching across the sky. The first quarter Moon is setting at centre right, with a moondog (paraselene) at far right. Domestic yaks (Bos grunniens) are common throughout the Himalayas, the Tibetan Plateau and north into Mongolia. Photographed on 29 September 2014, from Dirapuk Gompa on the Mount Kailashi pilgrimage trail, at an elevation of 5200 metres.
