Coloured chest X-ray of the lung of a patient with valley fever, or pulmonary coccidioidomycosis. This a fungal lung infection caused by Coccidioides sp. fungi endemic to desert and semi-arid regions of the south-western USA, Mexico and South America. Infection occurs through inhalation of spores. Symptoms include a cough, chest pain, fever and a rash. Chronic infections can cause abscesses in the lungs that can lead to scarring. Treatment is with antifungal drugs. The disease is most common in agricultural workers. | |
