Milky Way, zodiacal light and planets, seen in the night sky over Jinfo Mountain, China. The band of the Milky Way runs diagonally from upper left to lower right. The Milky Way is our galaxy seen from the inside, forming a band of stars and nebulae stretching across the sky. Running from lower left to centre is the cone-shaped glow of zodiacal light. Zodiacal light is sunlight reflected from dust particles orbiting in the plane of the solar system. From Earth it is seen as a cone of light along the ecliptic, the orbital path of the Sun, Moon and planets in the sky. This view is just before true dawn, with two planets visible along the zodiacal light: Venus (lower centre) and Jupiter (just right of centre). Photographed on 15 September 2012. | |
