Macrophages are cells of the immune system that engulf foreign and damaged cells, including cancerous cells. There are two macrophage subtypes, M1 and M2, which have complementary roles. M1 macrophages activate the immune system, while M2 cells soothe the ensuing inflammation. Cancer has a double-edged strategy to evade macrophages. Firstly, it turns the combative M1 macrophages into peaceful M2 macrophages, and secondly malignant cells express a ‘friendly’ signal that tricks M1 cells into leaving them alone. However, current research, might have found a way to defeat both of these mechanisms and activate macrophages that can destroy cancer cells. Magnification: x4000 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
