Sir Thomas Gresham (1519-1579), British financier and founder of Gresham College, the first home of the Royal Society. Gresham was a successful financier who founded the Royal Exchange and who put forward 'Gresham's Law' which claims that 'bad money tends to drive good money from circulation'. Gresham built a mansion house in 1566 in London, England. When Gresham died he provided the building for the founding of a college. Lecturers were appointed, and by 1645 Gresham College had become a meeting place for scientists and thinkers. The Royal Society grew out of these meetings and was founded in 1660 to promote experimental scientific learning. Artwork published in 1847. | |
