Cuttlefish bone. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the surface of cuttlefish (Sepia sp.) bone, or internal shell. This is calcareous bone and is mostly composed of calcium carbonate. It has to be strong, to withstand the hydrostatic pressure it is put under, but also light, and so its interior has many air-filled spaces. Cuttlefish are cephalopods, related to squid and octopus. Magnification: x1900 when printed at 10 centimetres wide. | |
