Housefly eye. Image 6 of 6. Coloured atomic force micrograph (AFM) of the eye of a common housefly (Musca domestica). The surface of one of the facets (ommatidia) of its compound eye is seen here. Each ommatidium is a simple eye which sends a signal to the fly's brain. The brain combines the thousands of images to form a mosaic view of the world. The image is not sharp but is excellent at detecting movement. Magnification: x600, 000 at 6x6cm size. For a sequence showing this fly's eye at successively higher magnifications, see images Z340/501-506. | |
