Rotifer. Coloured light micrograph of a rotifer (Phylum Rotifera). This microscopic aquatic organism is found in freshwater throughout the world. At the tip of its head (top) is a round structure surrounded by cilia (microscopic hairs). The cilia waft water into the animals mouth and filter food, decaying organic matter and microscopic plants, from it. The cilia are also used for locomotion. At the base of the rotifers body is a foot that can secrete a cement-like substance to anchor it to objects. Magnification: x160 when printed 10 centimetres tall. | |
