Kidney tubules. Coloured scanning electron micro- graph (SEM) of tubules in a kidney. Kidneys are the filtering organs of the body, removing waste products and toxins from the blood. This is achieved by filtering units called glomeruli (not seen), tight knots of blood capillaries through which waste products diffuse. There are around one million glomeruli in each kidney. Filtered fluid passes into the collecting tubules seen here, where more water and useful substances are absorbed, concentrating the fluid further. The concentrated fluid passes to the bladder as urine. Of the 180 litres produced every day, over 99% is reabsorbed. Magnification: x170 at 6x7cm size. x260 at 4x5ins | |
