Gall bladder. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the lining of the gall bladder. This lining mucosa is made up of columnar epithelial cells, each appearing rounded on the surface. The gall bladder is a muscular sac attached to the liver which concentrates and stores liver bile. Each cell of the gall bladder lining has tiny microvilli (hair-like projections) which serve to increase the surface area inside the organ. This facilitates water uptake from the bile. Bile is then released from the gall bladder into the duodenum of the intestine, where it aids in the digestion of food by emulsifying fats. Magnification: x180 at 4x5 inch size.
