Retina rod and cone cells. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of receptor cells in the human retina, the light-sensitive tissue that lines the inside of the eye. Rod cells (white) perceive light of different intensities, whereas cone cells (yellow) allow colour vision. Light triggers chemical signals in the photoreceptor cells, which are transmitted along neurons in the optic nerve (not seen) to the brain.
