Vesicular exanthema of swine virus particles. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of particles (virions) of vesicular exanthema of swine virus (VESV), a type of Calicivirus. The virions are characterised by the 32 cup-shaped indentations present on their surface. VESV infects pigs, causing fever and the appearance of vesicles in the mouth and on the snout and feet. The clinical symptoms are very similar to those seen in foot and mouth disease. Spread of the disease is controlled by the slaughter and disposal of infected animals and any animals they have contacted, with rigorous disinfection procedures. Magnification: x130,000 at 6x7cm size.
